When I was a kid, my dad brought home a brand-new Apple IIc, declaring it “more computer than we’ll ever need.” That computer shaped my life in so many ways: it was the first time I heard the word “font”; it was my first experience using programming to create interesting imagery; the 300-baud modem a friend gave me provided my first exposure to “the internet” — BBSs, at the time. I still remember when my computer-geek friend got the very first Macintosh. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was hooked.

I’ve been using Apple products daily for around 27 years. I’ve never owned any other type of computer. Now, not a waking moment goes by when I’m not inches away from an Apple product, if not actively using it. As so many people have said in the last 12 hours, it’s telling that I found out about his death on my iPhone — a device that could only have existed in science fiction even just 10 years ago, made commonplace reality by his vision and drive. From my career as a graphic designer, to the music I listen to (and the way I listen to it), to the way I communicate with people and interact with the world, his influence is everywhere.

The world — and Apple — will go on without Steve Jobs, but his absence leaves a huge hole.

I cannot possibly overstate the impact he has had on my life. I hope I can express even just a small amount of my gratitude. Thank you for the vision. Thank you for the tools. Thank you for teaching a generation to value design.
